Valere Gaspard

Hello! My name is Valere, I am a PhD Candidate in Political Studies at the University of Ottawa under the co-supervision of Dr. Benjamin Ferland and Dr. Luc Turgeon. I received my Master of Arts from the University of Ottawa (2021-2022) and my Bachelor of Arts from the University of Western Ontario (2016-2020). My PhD research is supported in part by funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC, CGS Doctoral award).

My research focuses on Canadian politics, satisfaction with democracy, electoral management bodies, electoral integrity, voting, political institutions, and politicians. I am interested in better understanding how politicians and citizens think about democracy and elections, and how political institutions impact these views.

I am both a researcher and practitioner. In addition to my position as a Research Fellow at Western University and Trent University’s Leadership and Democracy Lab, I have practical experience working at Elections Canada and in Parliament as an alumnus of Canada’s Parliamentary Internship Programme (PIP-PSP). My work and research are therefore informed by both practical and theoretical considerations.

I have been interviewed by media about my research and have written for several policy outlets and newspapers such as: Policy Options (IRPP), Policy Magazine (Canadian Politics and Public Policy), The Hill Times, The Conversation, and the LSE United States Blog.

When I am not researching, teaching, or working, I enjoy cycling around Ottawa, paddling on the Rideau River, and spending time with my family and friends.

Bonjour ! Je m’appelle Valère, je suis doctorant en études politiques à l’Université d’Ottawa sous la co-supervision de Dr Benjamin Ferland et Dr Luc Turgeon. J’ai obtenu ma maîtrise en arts de l’Université d’Ottawa (2021-22) et mon baccalauréat en arts de l’Université de Western Ontario (2016-2020). Ma recherche doctorale est soutenue en partie par un financement du Conseil de recherches en sciences humaines (CRSH, bourse de doctorat BESC).

Mes recherches portent sur la politique canadienne, la satisfaction à l’égard de la démocratie, les organismes de gestion électorale, l’intégrité électorale, le vote, les institutions politiques et les politiciens. Je cherche à mieux comprendre ce que les politiciens et les citoyens pensent de la démocratie et des élections, et comment les institutions politiques influencent ces opinions.

Je suis à la fois chercheur et praticien. Outre mon poste de chercheur au Leadership and Democracy Lab de l’Université de Western et de l’Université de Trent, j’ai des expériences pratique du travail à Élections Canada et du Parlement en tant qu’ancien élève du Programme de stages parlementaires du Canada (PSP-PIP). Mon travail et mes recherches s’appuient donc sur des considérations à la fois pratiques et théoriques.

Lorsque je ne suis pas en train de faire de la recherche, d’enseigner ou de travailler, j’aime faire du vélo dans la région d’Ottawa, pagayer sur la rivière Rideau et passer du temps avec ma famille et mes amis.
